The unexpected phone call
04 May 2017
I had an unexpected phone call yesterday. It was from a colleague of mine who works in another Government Department and he was praising an event we run called ISLEXPO. “One of the best events run by Government” was how he worded it. “If only we did more positive things like this”.
It’s easy to ignore the good things Isle of Man Government does – after all, we’re quite reserved when it comes to shouting about the things we achieve. Take ISLEXPO as a case in point. Last year’s event has seen the creation of 28 potential new jobs in our economy, whilst grant enquiries more than doubled following the event. We had a reach of over 1 million on social media, trended on Twitter, 99% of attendees would register again and over 97% of people we surveyed would recommend the event to a friend.
The feedback we received at the time was overwhelming. The mixture of business advice, networking, pitching sessions, inspirational speakers and digital workshops seemed to really hit the spot with the local businesses and residents alike. One of the junior ‘Pitch It!’ sessions involved a thought journal aimed at teenagers with mental health issues – it was picked up by one of the ‘dragon’ investors who brought them over to Northern Ireland, made introductions and became their business mentor.
ISLEXPO 2017 has all the potential to be as good as, if not better than, last year’s event. Now over 2 days, we have Travel Correspondent Simon Reeve, Futurologist Jim Mellon, Entrepreneur Emma Sinclair and Ex-Google Director Dan Cobley talking through their stories of success. And then there’s my personal favourite, the Pitching sessions, which always make me wonder if I could ever be brave enough to stand on a stage and share my ideas in front of a room full of business minds and a panel full of investors.
It’s only 3 weeks till ISLEXPO 2017 so if you haven’t yet registered then I suggest you do so soon!
