An Island of opportunity
06 February 2017
At the Department of Economic Development we strive to support industry by anticipating their needs and working with them to find solutions. E-Business in the Isle of Man is booming. E-Gaming and E-Business combined now contribute to 28% of the Island’s GDP and are continuing to grow. The consequence of this is that there are now plenty of opportunities for the right IT professionals.
In 2016, 144 additional jobs were created within e-Business on the Island. As I type, the companies operating here have vacancies to fill another 500 positions.
Perhaps unsurprisingly then, a big part of my role supporting industry is to travel to recruitment events and promote the opportunities that exist on the Island. The Isle of Man offers candidates the opportunity to work in an amazing business ecosystem full of new experiences and opportunities. There are numerous exciting roles with dynamic, impressive companies that are constantly at the forefront of technology. This is great news for professionals in the industry because there is plenty of room to progress and build an outstanding career here, while maintaining a great work-life balance.
Both individuals and businesses are recognising the wealth of opportunity in the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man boasts a buoyant economy and an enviable quality of life. Island residents benefit from low living costs when compared with London, other UK business centres and offshore jurisdictions, commutes that rarely last any more than 30 minutes on-Island and flights from Dublin are just 25 minutes in duration. A low population density also ensures that there is plenty of open outdoor space to enjoy and the last reported crime rates showed the Isle of Man as the safest place to live in the British Isles.
I really believe that the Isle of Man offers those working in IT focussed businesses the best of both worlds. In the Isle of Man you can have a cutting edge career, yet you’re never more than 20 minutes from the beach. You can spend less time commuting and more time taking care of what really matters to you, whether that’s work or just squeezing a little more out of your free time.
